Understanding Issue Linking in Jira:

Issue Linking in Jira allows you to create associations between different issues, illustrating dependencies, relationships, or simply providing additional context. By establishing these connections, enhance the traceability of the work and enable the team to navigate the project landscape with greater clarity.

How to Link Issues:

  1. Navigate to the Issue:
  • Log in to your Jira account and navigate to the issue you want to link.
  1. Select ‘More’ in the Top Menu:
  • In the top menu of the issue, locate and click on the “More” option.
  1. Choose ‘Link’ from the Dropdown:
  • In the “More” dropdown, select “Link.” This will open the Link dialog.
  1. Select the Type of Link:
  • Choose the type of link that best represents the relationship between the issues. Common types include “blocks,” “is blocked by,” “duplicates,” and “is duplicated by.”
  1. Search for the Related Issue:
  • Begin typing the key or summary of the issue you want to link. Jira will provide autocomplete suggestions to help you find the correct issue quickly.
  1. Choose the Related Issue:
  • Select the related issue from the suggestions. You can add a comment to provide more context for the link if needed.
  1. Click ‘Link’ to Confirm:
  • Once you’ve selected the related issue and added any necessary comments, click the “Link” button to confirm the association.

Viewing Linked Issues:

  1. Navigate to the Linked Issues Section:
  • In the issue view, find the “Linked Issues” section. This section displays all the issues linked to the current one.
  1. Explore Relationship Details:
  • Click on the linked issue to explore details and navigate between the connected tasks easily.

Common Types of Issue Links:

  1. Blocks and is Blocked By:
  • Represents a blocking relationship between two issues.
  1. Duplicates and is Duplicated By:
  • Indicates duplicate issues in the system.
  1. Relates To:
  • A generic link to represent a relationship between two issues.
